Growth and Development at Two Months

Growth

(general info re growth)

Weight
A two month old baby boy weighs anywhere between 3.8K and 6.4K.
A two month old baby girl weighs anywhere between 3.6K and 5.8K.
Of course, some girls will weigh more than some boys and premature babies and twins/triplets usually weigh less than full term single babies. Your baby is probably gaining upwards of 500gm per month.

What about length?
Boys 56cm to 65cm and girls anything from 52cm to 60cm.
Your baby is probably growing about 1.5 to 2cm a month.

Development at 2 months

(general info re development)

Large Body Movements
* Your baby's head now stays in the midline when she lies on her back
* Did you know that some very young babies can move themselves especially if they are upset about something by digging their heels into the surface they are lying on and wriggling around? If your baby seems likely to be able to do this take care of leaving her on change tables, table tops or beds.
* Most eight week old babies still don't have head control and will need their heads supported a lot of the time
* Some eight-week old babies can lift their heads when put on their tummies (it doesn't mean that they will be smarter and stronger than the rest).

Small Body Movements
* Hand are more likely to be open at times although some babies' hands remain closed
* May hold the handle of a rattle briefly but has very little hand control
* Grasps a finger that is put into her palm

Vision
* Begins to recognise mother
* Looking straight ahead a lot of the time
* Starting to follow with eyes

Hearing and Speech
* Turns to sound of nearby human voice
* Still startles to sudden noises
* Starting to coo, often in answer to mother's talk. Also starting to make musical little throaty noises. Crying, however remains the most powerful voice.

Social Behaviour and Understanding
* Social smiling well under way for most. A few babies stay reserved for another two weeks.
* Your baby will start to take much more interest in what is going on around him and is beginning to be aware of what is about to happen in relation to feeding, bathing.
