Growth and Development at three monthsGrowth(general info re growth)Weight A three month old baby girl weighs anywhere between 4k and 6.6k. A three month old baby boy weighs anywhere between 4.2k and 7.2k. Weight gains are still around 500gm and upwards a month. The big weight gainers (400gm) are now probably not gaining as much. Length A three month old baby girl measures anything from 55cm to 63cm A three month old baby boy measures anything from 57cm to 65cm Development(general info re development) Large Body Movements * Much better head control but some babies still have some head lag when pulled up from lying to sitting * Kicks vigorously * If held on a firm surface may support weight but most babies sag a bit at the knees. Some babies will weight bear totally on a firm surface from as early as one or two months (this doesn't make them smarter or stronger than the rest) * Hands are now held loosely clenched but some babies still keep them closed a lot of the time. Small Body Movements * Brings hands to midline and starting to use hands to play * Fists constantly in mouth * Holds a rattle for a small time if you place it in her hand but cannot hold it and look at it at the same time. Vision * Loves watching her hands especially individual fingers as she starts to open her hands * Recognizes breast/bottle and makes excited movements (mostly). Some babies start to refuse and play around at feed times between now and five months as they are increasingly distracted by what's going on around them. * Follows objects from side to side, moving head Hearing and Speech * Responds more consistently to loud noises * Gets excited by approaching voices especially mother's * The 'cooing' and throaty noises are now constant musical talking noises especially when she is relaxed and fresh from a feed or a sleep. * Chuckling and laughing also start between 3 and 4 months. Social Behaviour and Understanding * Starting to become intensely curious about everything she comes in contact with. * Responds with delight to friendly games and talking * Usually now enjoys baths (but not all babies so don't worry if yours is still not that enthusiastic about her bath).
