Growth and Development at four monthsGrowth(general info re growth)Weight A four month old baby boy weighs anywhere between 5k and 8k A four month old baby girl weighs anywhere between 4.8k and 7.4k Weight gains start to become less than they were although some babies keep gaining 300+gms a week. Length A four month old baby boy measures anything from 60cm-68cm A four month old baby girl measures anything from 57cm-66cm Development(general info re development) Large Body Movements * For most babies the head lag is gone when pulled from lying to sitting * A lot of babies can take some weight on their forearms when placed on their tummies with legs extended (for others it takes a little longer to do this). * Some babies are starting to roll from front to back (intentional rolling is extremely variable, some babies don't roll until nine months) * Some babies can hold both their legs a few centimetres in the air when lying on their backs in the bassinet * Hands start to be more relaxed and open more often Small Body Movements * Clasps and unclasps hands * Can suck a single finger or thumb as opposed to the whole fist * Beginning to hold objects and wave them around * Starting to examine objects with both hands, eyes and mouth Vision * Very excited by visual stimulation * Vision is almost fully developed * Moves head to follow objects Hearing and Speech * Likes sound-making toys * Turns head to look for sound * Reacts to sudden loud noise * Much less crying (usually) * Increasing talking noises and vowel sounds 'oo' and 'ah' * Makes talking noises back when spoken to (not all the time) Social and Understanding * Anticipates being lifted * Laughs when played with * Can discriminate different faces End of fact sheet Robin Barker 20(c)00 saftey notice and disclaimer |
