Growth and Development at Twelve MonthsGrowth(general info re growth)Weight A twelve month old baby girl weighs anywhere between 7.8k and 11.2k A twelve month old baby boy weighs anywhere between 8.2k and 12k After the first year the weight slows right down and you are likely to only see modest gains every three months or so. Increases in height continue so many babies now start to look longish and thinnish. The rounded baby look starts to disappear And until some muscle tone develops, most have funny little pot bellies. It is the start of the toddler years. Length A twelve month old baby girl measures anywhere between 70cm and 80cm A twelve month old baby boy measures anywhere between 72cm and 82cm Twelve months marks the start of the toddler years. The toddler years are a time in life when babies not only become physically mobile but also start to separate from their parents and find their own identities emotionally and socially. Toddlerhood does not just refer to the ability to crawl and walk and run. It encompasses the whole range of development that takes place as babies become children. Some babies don't get into the full swing of self-assertiveness and start testing the adults they love until fourteen or fifteen months, others start to show signs of asserting themselves as early as nine months. The toddler years are said to end at age three but many parents find that by age two this interesting but testing time is just about over. They discover that suddenly, instead of a baby they have a small child. Development(general info re development) Large Body Movements * Sitting well on her own indefinitely * She will probably be crawling but some babies are still just sitting * Some bottom shuffle (a normal variation) * Lots of babies are 'cruising' around the furniture * Many are walking on their own * If you have stairs your baby will be able to crawl upstairs but not down Small Body Movements * She now uses her index finger and thumb to pick up treasures she finds (crumbs, fluff off the carpet, string, paper) * Both hands are used to examine, eat and manipulate objects. Will try to figure out how to hold three things at once by holding two in one hand, under her arm or in her mouth. * Continual pointing starts around a year (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) Vision * Your baby can recognise you from a distance of six metres or more Hearing and Speech * Will turn to her name immediately and will also turn to a quiet noise behind each ear * Vocalises constantly as if having a conversation using lots of vowels and consonants; a few babies may have one or two words * Your baby will show by her behaviour and response that she understands conversation and simple instructions like 'come to mummy', 'give me daddy's shoe' and so on. Social and Understanding * Offers kisses and hugs to people she knows and trusts * Things tend to go into the mouth less often * Your baby will now examine things much more closely before waving them about and dropping them. She will also start to use things like a hairbrush or a small broom appropriately * Loves to forage in cupboards, drawers and dump things out of containers * Lots of babies start being able to put shapes into the correct hole if helped (depending on their temperament - others prefer to throw them around).
